The Future of DRM: a Prediction

Saturday 28 July 2007 at 11:26 am You might think that DRM - Digital Rights Management - is bad enough now. You might think that having video displays and cables and media and software and operating systems (Windows Vista) all designed with techniques intended to limit what you can do with that music CD or video you've bought has already broken the camel's back. You might even have begun to weaken your resolve and concede to the pressure and not resist. Fear not: I predict that it will get much worse in the next decade. The technological Holy Grail of DRM is yet to appear, but the signs of the Apocalypse are appearing. (more)

Reaping the harvest of our new culture of fear

Wednesday 18 July 2007 at 11:25 pm Uncharacteristically watching the news briefly on television tonight, I saw a report about the steam pipe breach in Manhattan. It was reported that many people thought at first it was "another terrorist attack". This is exactly why I've given up on the United States and am resolved to leave when I can. There is no hope for a society so mired in fear that they can't revolt to overthrow the overlords benefitting from controlling them with that fear. There is no hope for a society that understands only competition and not cooperation. There is no amount of educating now that can undo this slide into barbarism.

The Eight Glasses Myth

Tuesday 17 July 2007 at 02:48 am

You've all heard it: the Must Drink Eight Glasses of Water Per Day Commandment. I suspect most of you believe it's true, simply because you've heard it so much.

It's neither a Commandment nor true. Such is the corrupting power of broadcast TV and radio and print media, as an exaggerated form of word of mouth, that myths like this are born.

So apparently there *is* sex happening in my house

Saturday 14 July 2007 at 11:23 pm I'm just not a party to it: two amorous spiders have shacked-up and set up housekeeping in a tile crack by the high little window in my bathroom. (more)

Very unscientific research

Tuesday 10 July 2007 at 4:06 pm The alleged "research" in which pharmaceutical companies engage doesn't seem very much like what I would consider either research or science. It's hit-or-miss bad science. (more)

eBay is ripping-off many auction buyers

Friday 06 July 2007 at 09:46 am

I have encountered what was apparently a known and tolerated bug in eBay's auction system. Apparently the common wisdom, that one is never supposed to view the results of an auction immediately when it closes, managed to somehow pass me by. Color me stupid. What follows is a dialog that occurred on Slashdot:

About

Me: I'm a bright but hobbled "Scanner" with Asperger's Syndrome and ADD traits, fascinated by everything, a critical thinker, armchair ethicist and psychologist and anthropologist, agnostic, atheist, socialist, anti-capitalist, communalist, freethinker, and skeptic.

This Blog: This blog is a stream of consciousness for me, an accumulation of what I have learned and discovered, and what I have yet to learn and discover. I hope that readers of this blog will hear my thoughts almost at the moment I'm thinking them. Hopefully they're worth the hearing.
