The U.S. Supreme Court, as an aside to a software patent ruling, has rejected the longstanding criteria used to determine the "obviousness" of a patent:

Last week I was denied the ability to advertise a peaceful political assembly in my neighborhood with a few fliers. The political rally itself wasn't held in my neighborhood, I merely wanted to advertise it for the sake of people who might want to participate. I made the mistake of assuming there was a polite procedure in place to ensure that leftovers didn't become eyesores, and so I actually called HOA offices to announce my intentions. I discovered instead that no such procedures existed, because they attempt to unilaterally ban any and all such advertising.

Congressional Representative Dennis Kucinich has done what others feared to do: he's
submitted a resolution to the House of Representatives, HR 333, to impeach Vice President Richard Cheney. We can only hope that he or others are now inspired to further that act of courage and submit the same for Bush and Rumsfeld and others. Don't stop there, though... charge them explicitly with treason as well. If people who give away this country's secrets are guilty of treason, how much more guilty are those who devalue its goodwill and distort its moral compass for the ideological and financial gain of a select few?

You've all seen it: the e-mail chain letter that glorifies the American flag and that precious Pledge of Allegiance. Should we tell the ignorant bigots perpetuating it point-for-point how stupid it makes them look? Should we bother, knowing it's certain to fall on uneducated dogmatic ears? Well, to hell with educating them for the moment... I feel like shoving the truth in their faces and spitting on them. And I did:

Why is it so hard for so many people to grasp the very un-subtle distinction between apathy and laissez-faire? Why is it that so many people delude themselves about the distinction, pretending they're "easy-going" or "tolerant" when what they truly are is indifferent, unaware, and apathetic?
Sadly, I don't have any theory to explain this aberration... I just needed to ask the question out loud and hear it reverberate off the cyber-walls.

Since my rant about the Imus scandal, a few friends have taken issue with my stance on the matter, in particular disagreeing with my statement that it should have been Imus' state of mind and intent that decides any claims of racism, not the perceptions and reactions of some listeners.

Don Imus should not have been fired. His radio show should should not have been cancelled. Instead, the NAACP and other people and groups bitching about his latest controversial remark should have been told to suck it up and shut up, and spend some introspective time reviewing the controversial things they themselves and others say without such repercussion, and instead complain about the double standards that exist.

According to a Slashdot news summary, in 2005 students at a high school created fraudulent MySpace profiles of the school principal, which not only other students but the principal's daughter happened to see. The phony profiles ultimately led to substantial interruption of school activities, waste of manpower attempting to identify those responsible, at least one student suspension, and multiple lawsuits including one by parents alleging "civil rights" violations and a defamation suit by the now ex-principal against four students.
I have a simple solution, I think.

This news is over a year old, but I never heard of it until now: President George W. Bush refused to visit the resting place of Mahatma Gandhi during a visit to India, claiming it was an affront to his beliefs because the Gospel describes cremation as a pagan practice!

I'm forming an impression, a theory, that people with Asperger's Syndrome are often even less tolerant of each other than are the neurotypical folks they accuse of intolerance and being bullies.

This made me feel good... I helped a woman who was confused about the relationship of democracy and communism. Since I'd spent so much time thinking and reading about such things myself in recent years, I jumped in and gave her some ideas. I knew Yahoo Answers exists, but had never given contributions of mine any thought; I only noticed her question as a link on another Yahoo page. So here's her question and what I had to say:
